THE ASSOCIATION
In the early nineties with the idea of a group of persons like Mr. K. C. Bharatiya, Mr. Bimal Kothari, Mr. Pravin Dongre, Mr. Faqirchand Jindal, Mr. Ghanshyam Tanna, Mr. Chandrakant Thacker and Mr. Suresh Kumar Agarwal to support one another in the efforts to increase India’s presence in the pulses market of various countries of the world, “The Pulses Importers Association” was formed under the leadership of Mr. K. C. Bharatiya in 1992.
The objectives of the Association were mainly to exchange views among the importers community and to represent before various authorities and bodies for seeking solutions to problems and difficulties faced by us and to bring down the control on prices of Pulses.
An early success was the continuance of the offices of the Importers in the island city when the Maharashtra Government had decided to shift the entire agricultural produce markets out of the city to Navi Mumbai. It was the active representation and very convincing reasons that the Association put-forth to the government authorities that made them relax this decision in favour of the pulses importers.
PIA has been involved in a lot of interaction with various government departments connected with the Trade and Commerce regarding issues that affect the importers from time to time. The Association also has a constant channel of dialogue with Customs authorities, Port authorities, Shipping companies and various state and central government agencies and bodies. Representations were made whenever additional shipping charges, quarantine conditions, etc were introduced and through our intervention we were able to reduce the burden on the importers.
The advent of the Commodity Exchanges and their vigorous growth during the recent months has brought new challenges before us. This new culture, which undoubtedly is meant to benefit the actual farmers, necessarily calls for greater professionalism in our working as importers. It has also opened up new vistas for trading in commodities and allowing us the hedge our positions and achieve better results..
With the liberalization and globalization that has overtaken us, the world is now at our doorsteps. The internet revolution has even made communications easy and brought buyers and sellers into closer association. With the trade agreements between countries and improvement in trade relationships, the problems that different countries encounter are almost similar in nature. Keeping this in mind, we plan to throw open our association to firms and companies of other countries also and gradually make ours an association of and for the benefit of the entire Asian community.
